In the interest of not burying the lede:
You can read SEX CRIMINALS #1 digitally for free on Comixology or, DRM free and in a format of your choosing, via Image Comics
You can buy SEX CRIMINALS #2 there, too.
If you read digital comics on an iOS device, you can buy the book via the site and then load it onto your device; Apple does not allow the in-app purchase of that issue.
The night before the release of the second issue of SEX CRIMINALS two weeks ago, Eric Stephenson (publisher at Image Comics) informed us (myself, along with Chip Zdarsky, co-creator of SEX CRIMINALS) that the book would not be available for sale via Comixology on iOS devices immediately and that the book was under review.
The book, purchasable on Comixology for any other device and OS — including the Mac OS, where readers could then relaunch the Comixology app on their iOS device and download the book they bought on their desktop — remains purchasable on the iBooks app.
Image checked with Apple daily until Tuesday, when Apple explained their decision:
"We found that one or more of your In-App Purchases contains content that many audiences would find objectionable, which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.”
They offered nothing more specific — and don’t have to — to explain their choice.
I tweeted the following:
official: SEX CRIMINALS #2 is BANNED BY APPLE for sale via comixology on iOS. Not the iBooks store though. Because it’s hilarious that way >
"We found that one or more of your In-App Purchases contains content that many audiences would find objectionable, …
"…which is not in compliance with the App Store Review Guidelines.”
So there it is: Apple screws SEX CRIMINALS
Apple has every right to decide what they will and will not sell and where; @zdarsky and I have every right to mock them for it
This isn’t censorship, it’s hypocrisy, and, also, hilarious.
My feelings remain more or less consistent with that.
We spoke to these three different writers/reporters about the issue:
Travelling and working from New York these last few days, I hadn’t had a chance to put all that together here yet. Thanks, sorry, and thanks. Hope you check the book out.
